Now that UFC 129 has come and gone, igniting the crowd at Toronto's Rogers Centre in a manner that hadn't been seen since WWE Wrestlemania X8, despite a thoroughly under whelming main event between Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields.
Coming off of a much-hyped flop of a fight, the UFC needs a signature match to continue their determined march into the mainstream. Merely lining up overmatched contenders to be demolished by the likes of GSP and Anderson Silva isn't going to cut it.
The UFC has had trouble building the kind of rivalries that MLB thrives on or a signature match-up like the NBA has with Lakers-Celtics. Between the long training times required for a fight, the various weight divisions, and the unusual amount of camaraderie between the best fighters, UFC boss Dana White has rarely been able to put together the marquee match-ups that fans clamour for.
(The recent cancellation of Frankie Edgar's rematch with Gray Maynard only makes the need for a headline fight all the more pressing.)
Here's a few fights he should make happen sooner rather than later to keep his sport growing. (Warning: Don't expect any surprises, people have been asking for these for some time.)
Anderson Silva vs. Jon "Bones" Jones
This fight would pit the future of the UFC (Jones) against arguably the best fighter in the promotion's history (Silva). Silva is so superior to the rest of the middleweight division that some commentators have suggested he hasn't had a real challenge in years.
A fight with Jones would certainly change that. A fast, powerful athlete with incredible reach, Jones is probably the biggest "next big thing" that mixed martial arts has ever seen. White initially wanted to bring the prodigy along slowly, but after wins against Vladimir Matyushenko and Ryan Bader, he was given his title shot and completely dismantled Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, cementing his status as one of the best fighters in the world.
Pitting the two Muay Thai experts against one another would bring out the best in both of them and be one of the most profitable fights in history.
Anderson Silva vs. George St-Pierre
St-Pierre is another guy who's domination of the competition has started to render him almost boring. With all the negativity surrounding his clinical - but dull - beatdown of Shields in Toronto swirling, there'd be no better time to bulk up and take on the guy everyone's wanted to see him fight. This one's a lot more likely than Silva-Jones at this point, and many thought it would be Silva's next matchup. But St-Pierre has said it would take at least eight months to bulk up to a fighting weight of 185, so in the meantime Spider will put his UFC Middleweight Championship on the line against Yushin Okami in Rio on August 27.
Still, keep an eye out for this one, it definitely seems to be in the offing.
Brock Lesnar vs. Butterbean
Because it'd be hilarious. |
